Marks/Inscriptions: P. 404 P.ile, Walter Hippo, te (1835-85) was a son of Jean Hippo lyte Pilliet (1793 -1881) who fought in the Na polonia Wars came to London with L oris Phillies . He met in Eng Anne Mary dau of Charles Coyne; of Weston Coyne Staffs. Hey sister Mary marr. Charles Lambert Clifford and she became the mother of Charles Cl.ff oed later Si Charles. Walter Hip poly te Pilliet was born in France and was brought up in Eng. He came to N.Z. in the late 40's and went to Flax bourne , the Station o f Clifford and weld as a cadet. This did not suit him and he went to Invercargill where he became a surveyor and land agent. He spent some time in the maier survey an d was private sec. to Donald McLean when he was Native Minister. In '56 he was appointed sub. collector f Customs at picton, and later Warden and magistrate on the Moal borough gold fields. .He held similar positions ( mag. + customs at Kaikoura (69) and Akaroa (70) where he was gazetted R. M. of Akaroa and Returning officer.( 2p.70. When Rolleston made the first official drive over the hew road from Pigeon Bay to Akaroa an official cli ner was gwen at Akaroa at which Pilliet as R.M. presided Jan . 72.. H was inovolived in' a case with S.C. Marks/Inscriptions: W.H. Pilliet P. 404 who accused him of ass auditing him while in a state of drunken ess. The case was doubt ful and was dismissed. He resigned from the position of R. M. Akaroa o0 in Dec. 73 . In Ap. 74 he easily defeated Henry Piper for the Bays seat in the Prov. Coun. In a contest with Wm. Montgomery - for the Akaroa seat in the Gen. Assembly he dis graced d himself making various per son al allusions Which were ii leading and untrue. Wm . Montgomery dealt with him Severely but with dignity. Pilliet was well beaten but got a Shi pers ing number o f Voles. vols to 186. He went in r journalis in and at about this time took over and published, from James Niven the Rangiora Standard ( Standard + North Canty Guardian) , Later he published The Sin a Ch.Ch. evening paper. He was po resent at the opening of the Press Club Sept. 76. He got into, Part. for Stanmore D.C.81 beating Cowlishaw by 21 Votes . Cowlishaw brought an election petition against him an d succeeded in un seating him. He had not done anything very serious .
