Marks/Inscriptions: H.60 Halswell , Edmund Store( 1874) was a son of Henry Halswell of Prestig n Raw hire and was educ. at St Johns Coll. Cambr He was admitted to the Inner Temple in '31 and was called to the Bari 1'34. As a shareholder and member of the C. of E. Soc. he was appointed to the N.Z. Company as commissioner of native reserves and arrived in NZ. by the Lady Nugent in '41. He was appointed a magistrate in May, chair man of quarter sessions and protector af aborigines for the Southern dist. July 41. and judge of the County Count , Feb. '42. In '42 he tried and convicted a young Maori chief for theft. In '45 he was an o officer of the defence organisation in the Te Aro dist. He was one of the 50 who subscribed their names to the prospectus of the Canty. Assoc, ; he was an original member of the Bd. of manage ment. When Lord Mont ages commits on orira ion was sitting in '48 he and Capt. Thomas were probably the only two men in Eng. who could speak at first hand as having seen , give the Canty Plains and could evidence of the favourable respect o colonis ing them. His name appeared Among those present at the Canty. diner in Eng. Macmillan says he later took up missionary work in China.
