Marks/Inscriptions: H. 3. Habens, William James (1839 - 99) was born at Brighton and Educ. at Paget School , Brighton 46-55 and at Hack ney Coll. Lunden, 59-63. He was an accountant in London '55 - '57. In '62 he graduated B.A. London Univ. He was appointed to 9go out to N.Z. by the C.M.S. in London. by the Canterbury 1.7.63 was ordained 26.8.63 , em barked 19' Sept. and arrived N.Z. 10.1.64. When he arrived he met his brother Cong negation ales ts at the Oa fellows Hall and his first service was held in Bonnington s Music Hall - on the site of Dalgety - over Bonnington s Music Shop. The church was constituted with 37 persons and 4 absent He was therefore the first minister Trinity Con rega tion alist Church in Ch.Ch. He gave a brief history f the Church in Canty when the foundation stone of the present church was laid 6.11.73 which he read before placing it under tr stone. Daniel Reese was the builder and Rolleston . the Supt. laid the stone. His list of members of the church is still preserved and gives an in sight into the + ana ge ment. Various very good and staunch Chris trans switched from oue denomination r to another - apparently be cause attracted or repelled by the prea eking of Various ministers. Marks/Inscriptions: vessels died not come up to his high standard; and they had to 9o. In '65 he was ps President of the Literary Soc. in Ch.Ch - - a learned, debating Soc. In July. 66 he was examiner in geography, English composition modern and sacred his tory for the first oper scholarships offered by the Prov. Govt. o A. W.E. Stifle and Henry Cotterill were the Winners He was examiner again in '67, mist have given satisfaction. In '68 he was classical master at the Ch.Ch Academy 1 later to become "the old High School ) of which David Scott was rector . Wham Scott got into financial troubles Habens took his place The Rev. E. Beilby who succeeded Rev. J. 0'3. Hours at St. Johns Lat. S9. delivered several lecturer in Ch.Ch to packed audiences and Habens wrote a very long letter to the Lylt Times (25.11.71.) accusing him of pla 9arising and producing examples printed side by side to prove it. There was no doubt that he was right in his accusation but it was don b fue whether it was worth while stirring up s0 much feling to achieve such a trifling ol ct. Marks/Inscriptions: H.3 charlatan, Habens and Colborne Veel were appointed Inspectors of schools receiving a Govt. July 72. He was admitted to the degree of B.R. N.Z. niv. Ap. 72. subsidy When Canty hiv. Coll was was started he was an or iginal member of the Board He was advaita elected to the first West Ch.Ch. Sch. Comm. Ang. 73. His g hens Bible class was 9 g neat success , and they presented him with Young h a silver inset and , May 73. He was sec. to the first East Ch.Ch. Sch. Comm. which was officially opened by the Gov. , the Marquis of Nor mab by 17.11.75 The school was designed by Mount fort and there were 1223 children present. He succeeded Wynn Williams as chairman of the sch . Comm. July 75 He was Sec. to the Canty. (later North Canty) Bd. of Educ. from Jan 7 to May '78. In Ap 78 he was gazetted Inspector General of schools for N.Z and he left Ch.C. for Wgtn. When he accepted the Inspector ship of Schools. Marks/Inscriptions: 4 H.3 Habens accepting the Inspector ship . They gave hi selva tea and coffee service and 160 s0s. Fervent Christians like J.H. Twenty man and T.S. Mannering (uther of them members) spoke afterwards. Habers said he would continue to be kn own as "the Rev." T.S. Marenskys said of him. ' H.Z. owes him a debt of gratitude for his scholarly teaching , his Chr ist ran example , and his indefatigable labors in the came of Education. His salary as Inspector to the Bd. of Educ. (Canty) was £ 550 plus £5o for examination work - a high salary for the times. A remark made by some oue makes it app ear he was bo big man physically.
