Marks/Inscriptions: H. 3. Habens, William James (1839 - 99) was born at Brighton and Educ. at Paget School , Brighton 46-55 and at Hack ney Coll. Lunden, 59-63. He was an accountant in London '55 - '57. In '62 he graduated B.A. London Univ. He was appointed to 9go out to N.Z. by the C.M.S. in London. by the Canterbury 1.7.63 was ordained 26.8.63 , em barked 19' Sept. and arrived N.Z. 10.1.64. When he arrived he met his brother Cong negation ales ts at the Oa fellows Hall and his first service was held in Bonnington s Music Hall - on the site of Dalgety - over Bonnington s Music Shop. The church was constituted with 37 persons and 4 absent He was therefore the first minister Trinity Con rega tion alist Church in Ch.Ch. He gave a brief history f the Church in Canty when the foundation stone of the present church was laid 6.11.73 which he read before placing it under tr stone. Daniel Reese was the builder and Rolleston . the Supt. laid the stone. His list of members of the church is still preserved and gives an in sight into the + ana ge ment. Comm. which was officially opened by the Gov. , the Marquis of Nor mab by 17.11.75 The school was designed by Mount fort and there were 1223 children present. He succeeded Wynn Williams as chairman of the sch . Comm. July 75 He was Sec. to the Canty. (later North Canty) Bd. of Educ. from Jan 7 to May '78. In Ap 78 he was gazetted Inspector General of schools for N.Z and he left Ch.C. for Wgtn. When he accepted the Inspector ship of Schools.
