Marks/Inscriptions: G.368 Gay, Ernest (1832-95) wes a son of the Rev. Frederic. William Gray, of Wheat i of Castle Carey, Somerset and was born 2.7.32 . He came out in the 14.3. Tasmania in 3 about three years cabell earlier than his brothers and went as a cadet to Michael John Burke at Hals well. Acland says that he applied for the Coldstream Station on the Hinds on 1.1.54 and that his brother Henry got a licence for rin next door ; and that William Scott joined the G rays and bought Henry Grays r1n. According Do L.T. 25.3.63 Ernest Gray and Scott diss. part. 21.3. Coldstream was sold to the Studholme brothers in 67. In marr. 63 Gray offered a reward of £200 for information concerning 1700 sheep missing from Coldstream. He made his home at Hon Hay apparently soon after the sale of Coldstream. He was judge of thorough ed horses at the Ch.Ch. Show in '70 and net year was a vestryman of Halswell parish. In '72 he found a fire site for a quarry at Hon Hay just above the flat, making access easy. He was elected to the comm. of the Canty A. HP. Assoc in '71. He had married Margaret Macpherson a dau of Col. Ewen Macpherson. He represented Waitangi in the Canty Prov. Coun. 66 - 70 and was a member of the Leg. Coun. 66-83. In '74 he bought Thats well Farm at the foot of the hills for £627 (£25 par acre J. this had been John Grigg 's farm and had bee bought by Harry Gray at the Grigg and Russell land sale for £12 per ace in His house at Hon Hay was subject to flooding and he s built another house just above the flat an the '0's . This house was burnt down in 1915 and the Gerritt van Asch 's built new hoarse and in 1956 bought the whole of Hon Hay. The Ee t Gray family sailed for Eng. in the Hurunui 2.1.80. They were hisses H.M., E.M. , C.M., and Masters R.H. , and H.W. He followed in a later ship . They were away 2 ') years. They made a late trip to India and went up to the north where Roberts was forming his expediti on to Kandahar . They had a relation there, General Macpherson. who made everything easy for them. They saw bullock trams coming in every day with stores for the troops. Mrs Arthur Barker (M.M.) remembers the young Grays collecting on the old foot bridge across the Avon at Worst er St and jumping in the middle to make the bridge suing. She also remembered the water coming through the Hon Hay brouse diving the '68 flood.
