Marks/Inscriptions: D. 394 at Batting as , Co wick low Douglas, George (1825- ), says Acland, was born in Ireland, of scottish descent his ancestor having been a soldier in Cromwell s Army whom Cromwell rewarded with a grant of land in Ireland. Capt. Mitchell who had already v sited N.Z. and planned to settle there, returned home in 49 and persuaded Douglas to Ame int with him and settle They arrived in Sydney by the Raym ard . Dashwood also came out in this trip. Mitchell and Dashwood came across in the Lady Nugent but Douglas was not mentioned and he did ust make the overland romney comp listed by Mitchell and Dashwood. Mitchell took up M1 Grey and Douglas managed it and continued to manage it after the O'Connell bought t. Mitchell returned to India to. clear up his affairs and died ) dated 5 there. He then moved to the present homestead site of Broomfield. His station amounted to 22000 ac. including Mt. Grey itself . He registered his brand G.B. in 54. It was the 23 brand registered in Canty , John macfarlan 's being the first. Since Douglas 's death in 3 the station has been carried on by trustees . the latest manager was Jun Stratton. It is me of the few Canty properties still owned by the Original p family. George Donghas was on of the judges at the ploughing matche held by the Farmers Club nar ChCh in ; s0 he must have had a farming talk ground. He was an early member of the C. J.C . and had one of the silver medals, which, as a subscriber , admitted him fr life : he managed to lose it. He bought Lake Ohau Station from Burke and Guise Brittan in Ap. 60 for £ 1000. Douglass second house was built partly of timber from the Mt. 8 Grey Bush and partly of stone quarried on what is now L. Bugg 's farm . Frank Ashby carted the stone.
