Description
Monumental salt-glazed stoneware baluster vase with slender neck and flared mouth, designed and decorated by Mark V. Marshall and Eleanor Toson in coloured slip using tube-lining with an abstract seaweed-like design and small flowers on a heavily textured ground resembling ray skin. Colours are a mixture of ochre, russet, cream, green and aubergine.

Provenance details
Purchased from Gary Stylianou, Armadale Antiques Centre, Armadale, Victoria (Australia), who was selling on behalf of a private vendor. The private vendor had acquired the vase from a deceased estate in Gippsland, Victoria, where it had been since the 1920s, having originally been swapped for a piece of farm machinery at that time. The vase was originally exhibited by John Bates & Co., of Christchurch, in the royal Doulton section of his stand at the New Zealand International Exhibition of Art and Industry held in Christchurch 1906-7.: Jennifer Quérée: 03 June 2009
