Biography
Mark V. Marshall trained at the Lambeth School of Art before moving on to a local mason's yard as a stone carver, working on Gothic Revival churches. During this period, he also helped at the Martin Brother's pottery until 1874 when he joined Doulton's, staying with this firm until 1912. Marshall's works were some of the boldest and most exuberant ever produced at the Doulton Art Pottery, many pieces undoubtedly owing much to the Martin brothers, with grotesque and fanciful animals modelled in high relief hiding amongst scrolling foliage. He is regarded as one of the most versatile and imaginative modellers, designers and decorators ever to work at Doulton’s Lambeth factory. He kept in touch with changing artistic taste and trends and many regard the pieces produced in the Art Nouveau style as his best work.
