If this photo was taken in, or prior to 1873, then the age of the person would suggest it is likely to be Thomas Cholmondeley, 1801-1884, who lived at Port Levy and died at Opawa. A son, Charles born 1831, arrived in Canterbury on the Charlotte Jane, and this Thomas emigrated to Canterbury in 1853 with the rest of his family. A nephew, another Thomas Cholmondeley, also arrived in Canterbury on the Charlotte Jane but returned to England in 1852.
