Biography
Dr Alfred Charles Barker was the surgeon on the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four immigrant ships to arrive in Canterbury in 1850. Barker and his family settled in Christchurch on the edge of Cathedral Square. For many years he was the only doctor in the province and was an influential member of the community. After his wife Emma’s death in 1858, Barker retired from medicine and took up photography as a hobby. He is responsible for the earliest images of the province. Barker died in 1873 from meningitis.
