Description
One landscape format black and white photograph of an arch at a railway station, Christchurch, New Zealand. April 22 1869. Arch is topped with a flag and decorated with signs that read "Welcome", "Royal" and "Duke". Two men stand under the arch while another two men stand in the left foreground of the photograph. There is a brick building to the left and corrugated iron buildings behind the arch. The Port Hills can be seen in the distance.

The flag is of course the Royal Navy's White Ensign. This was the first Royal visit and involved the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, who arrived in Wellington as captain of the frigate HMS Galatea. I guess his naval position is the reason for flying the Royal Navy's white ensign on this arch.
