Marks/Inscriptions: V. 10 Van Asch , Gerritt (1836 -1908) was born in Hallan) and educ. there . He started to learn the art of leaching deaf intes when at Rotterdam where he was 18 and it became his fife work. He visite d deaf mute schools in Feared Germany . He went to Eng land in 59 on the mv it tion of some manchester merchant and taught there and then at Barnet, Herts and then in London He received an appointment from the Govt of N.Z in Oct. 79 He came out in the Scottish Prince and selected Sumner as a suitable place for his school. He arrived at Lyt by the Wellington 22.1.80 He rented rooms and land from C .L. Wiggins whis had started a school at Sumner. Fish M.H.R made some antrim s and allegations and a Commissio was set up to investigate. sn consisting of Colborne Veel and another Oct 92. His sy stan worked Solely ly lip. reading no sins nor finger langue e being used The allegations against the Deaf Mutism School Came from a discontented teacher who had been dis moss ed. All things considered the school came out of the enquiry very well .
