Marks/Inscriptions: S. 217 Shand, Alexander (1840 -1910) was a son of Archibald Watson Shand and was born in W.gt. . his parents having arrived in g the Oriental in that year. His father had a farm and h flour mill at Waiwetu. In 1850 the family moved to Dunedin where his father was sub. collector f Custome and in 55 he was again e moved. this time to the Chatham Is. where he was collector and R. M. Im 63 Alexander was appointed clerk and interpreter to the R.M. Capt. W.E. Thomas who had succeeded his f in father of exam , was E.M. when the Han Han prisoners escaped the Rifle man. e had a share with F.A. W. Cox, who had married a sister of his. in his Jin Whata marino and lived oy himself in a room a little way from the homestead. Shand was the leading authority on the Mori ori langone language, He suffered from early and severe arthritis which was so s evere that he could hardly move. one stormy night his room Caught fire and in as crippled state he was unable to escape and he and his Moori dictionary just ready for publication were destroyed Chudleigh said of him "He was burnt to death in his own house . Marks/Inscriptions: S. 217 getting out of the door and his rheumatism prevented him from et ing out of thse Window. All his Mori0ri M.S.S. and his Moori diction ary perished with him. He was a good colonists and a mist useful Islander and a good brother. No better Maori scholar existed. He published several papers in the Poly nes an Journal.
