Marks/Inscriptions: R. 165 Rhodes, Alfred (1818 -1902) was born in London and went to sea when youngs . He first vis it ed N.Z. in '45 in the Ralph Burnell which called at Wgtn and Nelson. Soon after , probably y) he sailed to Lylt in a small schoon er and helped to bing the G ree wood Brothers from Purau to Motunau. Rhodes took stores from Wgtn in the Sarah Jane owned by Fit herbert for the first su very0rs in Otago, and he first entered the Moly neue River from the sea. He He settled in Lylt. and was sent by Capt. Thomas ss weth in a large sealing boat W ith store for Surveyors in the Kaiapoi dist. He went up the Waimak for 6miles and was able to sail most of the way . The Maois helped him and he met with 1r0 difficulties. J. L.B o9s was surveying thoreau and he hadl w ith him Alfred Weston and Charles Denby. He lived at Lylt till 62 and then settled at Leithfield and farmed there. The Sefton Ploughing match of 66 was held son his farm ip and again next year. He went in for buy ing drain and seed . Alfred Rhodes and James Cook watermen bought from Chas.
