Marks/Inscriptions: R. 75 i Reay, Robert (1830 -1905 was usually known as Bob Reay and was easily the leading rider of the day. He rode the winner of the N.Z. Derby 6 times. At the Timaru Races of '62 he rode neo st of the winners . He won the Champs ion Race of £1000 for Lance + Creyke on Lady burd and numerous other races at the C.J. C . meeting of '65. There was a trotting match in Ch.Ch. 25.7.66 between the bay yielding Orlando and the bay mare Gentle Annie Orlando was ridden by Bob Reay and Gentle Annie b y Mr Smith . They started from the Styx at 8 . a m. and the mare got going quickly and won by 175 yards . The distance was 4 miles an d the time 12 mis 40 see. About 60hor semen followed the race on which there was a good deal f betting . After successful years of riding Winners he began to tram and own his own horses . He bought Nos worthy s Tilly Co Canny fa 650 gus after the C.J.C. meeting Nov. 73 ; also the mare Hatred for £300. H rode the Winner of the first N.Z. Grand National Mcdormand run at Waimate in 75. In the early days of the Ch.Ch . Hunt when Fred Hedge was mints man, Reay was whips.
