Marks/Inscriptions: P. 1a4 Pattis son, Hoel was born in Cornwall and was a neighbour and friend of Chudleigh . They came out to N.Z. together in the Matoaka in 1862. He went almost at once as rouse about to Samuel Butler at Meso po tamiami When Butler sold out to Parkerson , Pattison stayed on for another years Then he and Chudleigh went into part . in Whare anni Station in the Chatham Is. in 66 . He went back to Eng. in the Nevada in '1. The ngut before he was due to return to N.Z . he went to a dance and met Mis Merrim an , stayed a mon th Couger and returned to the Chat hams with his bride . She was a most beautiful Woman and her short life was trag ic. She came from the village 5ow ell pictured by Mrs Gaskell as Cantor d. Chudleigh said, f you want to see what an English que is made of watch a bride and mother ( in the rough circumstances he described)" I have seen one 50 and love my race " They added the reedar roomn to the station house t Wharekawi for the young couple. Chard leg h left for Eng. in 73 and Pattison built ar house for him self When Chudleigh returned there was a son Charlie and a dau. Hope. The scrubbe round the house was cleared and the land fenced and a mass of piri - piri (a larger form of bed i- bidi ) had spring up.
