Marks/Inscriptions: ) 131 Oswald , Charles Edward ( 1881) took the first contract for lighting the town of Ch.Ch. for which he used Kerosene lamps. His price was "per lamp per night. Gras was turned ol on by the Ch.Ch. Gas Co 26.12.64. Oswald was prominent in the Ratepayers Protection Soc. which was controlled by George Aller and Wynn Williams and maintained for over a year a battle with the Ch.Ch.C.C. over the question ) payment rates. He was elected chair man in 66. He sold his shop , lease. good will and stock of china, cutlery, weights and sidles ete in this year. He was bankrupt. in He bought what was known as "the little shop " which , intel a fire in 64 had stood in Colombo St between Glos. + Ar mag St3. He moved it on a trolley hauled by bullocks to the Ferry Road. He spoke at the winding S meeting of the Provincial Investment Loan Soc. He had a complaint to make. Geo Gould the chairman said he was the last man who had tanya right to Com plain. In 70 he had only paid 4 calls out of 12 and " '71 had paid 1subscription. He had received every indulgence from the Assoc. and had grossly abe sed that indulgence . He sold ol his stock of chandeliers in '68. marr. at Av onside 31.10.60 Sarah Eliz. Wilkins. S.
