Marks/Inscriptions: N. 96 Nicholl James (1838 -1917) was born at Dun anand , Co. Tyrone and went to school at Tully hur in. He came out in the Victory, arriving 16.12.6 with his wife Matilda Robinson and his inf. son Alex. F. He was for 6 years gardener for Mrs Deans at Ricc. He was the first to plough what i now W 1grain Aerodroue and also plough ed for John Ruddenklau. He bought 5 ac. of land at Addington of which more later. He also bought an other block of land on the S. side of the Lincoln Rd part of what was then the Rev. T.R. Fishers Lincoln Rd block called Cotswold Here he started a grocers and general produce store. He drove a cart round the country side, buying farmers produce and bringing out goods foe them . In this way he made enough to bey a good block of land at Hals weill . 50 ac. on the East side of Junction Rd. Nicholls Rd Halswell is named after him. His Halswell land cost him £ 45 per acre . He brit a good house on his land which cost him nearly a thousan d pounds - - still standing. When his 5 ac. of land at Addington was wanted by the Govt. for Railway purp ses, arr assessment Court was set up to decide the value. . the first sitting of such a Court. His successful career was die to hard work , thrift and shrewd ness. He d. Junction Rd. Halswell 1.9.17 ag 79 wife Matilda Robinson d. 15.9.01 58. family. eldest son Alexander Ferguson was 22 years head clerk to T.W. Stringer A.E. marr. Annie Mary Going, - still living Junction Rd (1961) John Robinson went into Holmes + Lough rey s law office.
