Marks/Inscriptions: N85 Newton, Joseph ( was in part. will Frank Egan as seed merchants and in porters ; they diss. part. Sept. 74. He announced his cl as agent ) e Alfred New ton of London and other well. known seed firms. He also got the agency e Ran some 's Coughs. For some time he and James Ballantyne were the two largest advertisers in the Ch.Ch. papers. In June 75 he staged a trial of his new ia elements - - a light 3 s furrow plough for stubble and a large heavy single furrow plough - evidently what ie would now call a swamp plough. Both were novel tes to farmers who were mick impressed. Newton ran a four. in- hand wach out to the trial on R.H. Camp bells Riccarton farm an d provided a good lunch. sued Cabl age Wilson fo r £5000 for libel. the words complained off were n. Mr Newton will be bart rup within s months" Joseph Newton came out o f the case as a light weight who talked big . Wilson cared too many Jus or him. Newton was awarded V/' dau ages July 7 , Soon after this W lson demonstrated a stone. crusher which he had bought f romn Dunedin, to the Mayor + Council: he mired theme to a champagne hunch after wands . Newton had a ver heavy stone crusher whedon on the way out which he also dei on stated to the Council ; he also thered his arguments with a charn paging Lunch .
