Marks/Inscriptions: N. 80 in Somerset Newton, Charles (1832 -85) married Anna Ta sewell ; they came out in the Regma and arri ied at Lylt. 5.1.58. Wm. Rolleston and Geo. Harper were also on the ship. . He and w .D. Barnard q.v. were joint proprietor of the White Hort Hotel; they sold it in Ang 63 and gave a very successful fare well diner at which John Ollivier presided , They diss pit. in Nov. 63 Sometime £ in the 60' he became the owner of fail led Lawford m the West Melton dist. and apparently it was his home for some years. He was LL in part. with Joseph Brabazon in 65; Joseph and his brother John had bought Tres than and were growing wheat on the better parts o t and newton was also growing wheat at Lawford. sane time later , in '71 he wrote to the Lylt. Times complaining that his men were cart ing wheat to the railway and there was no shed or covers fr the trucks. His wife had a daura t Lawford in 69. Alfred Cardale bought Lawford late on 71. He was one of the judges at the Farmers Club Ploughing Match in '60. The Pov. Govt issued a list of Mackenzie Country rune in '60 and his name appeared as owner of Richmond Station carrying 1400 sheep. He was elected to the Prov. Corn for Mt. Cook electorate May e . The C f brothers q7.v. built his h ores tend at Richmon d about 159. He gave a prize of £2 for the best shearer at the Ch.Ch. Show of time to be not less than of sheep ple hour. He was cl oxen as a director of the Canty Agree. Produce Export Co Sept. 67. He was one of the catte judges of the Ch.Ch. Show of 67. He judged at the Selwyn Forks Ploughing hast k Sept. 68 . He judged at the Champion Ploughing match held at Joseph Hills farm at Avon head Aug. 69. He was chairman of the Wes t Melton Sch. Comrie . He was judge of long woolle sheep at the Ch.Ch. Show 71. He and John Tucker Ford were in all Sorts of things to gether. They bought Ashfield Station from the McLean Bros and sold it to Wm. y Henry Clarkson . They bought what was f Brown. Cox + Cos Ling beach , Run, after Kermode + Moore had bought a large part of the fee old tautou a Fod bought what was left whop oss left of the Field B ros old station Ford started as an auctioneer and land agent in 71 and Newton joined him soon afterwards . In May - 2 they conducted + Nosworthy s sale at I Cam of this thorough bred stud and hew ton acted as auctioneer. The Lylt. Tines Report said " He officiated for the form and it must certainly be conceded that he did so will. skill. He op ned the Sale with a few pertinent remarks ar d his observations on ea. each lot were well judged. This probable marks the time when h left hanford and bought 100 ac. on the main North Rd which he called Northcote ; but whether he actually gave the name or do adopted it is not known. The name is still in use. He helped to start the well. kn own firm of Ti Hon and Gr miner butchers. t t. In '76 the Cheviot Station diary mentions that he was at Cheviot looking at cattle and horses. In the difficult times of the 80's sir Geo Clifford en trusted him with surplus stock tr own Stony hirst for sale. He was elected a member of the Canty O. + P. comm -24 74. After his death Northcote , by then of 111e ac. was sold for o £1010.
