Marks/Inscriptions: M. 648 Morrow , David (1837- 1920) was one f the founders of Monowai Bassett of Ch.Ch. He was born in his more , Down patrick , near Belfast, Ireland. as was Bassett. He served his apprenticeship in the general store of Bailie. Dorm patrick. Then he moved to sherrand + Co , Belfast, and became a traveller . Capt. Adair of the Blair gorrie advised Monowai and Bassett to emig rate to Canty . Morrow arrived in Melbourne in '63 and came on to Canty. in 66. The other partners were S.K. Bassett and Mrs Sarah Bassett. He Morrow ar ole to Bassett recom mending that they start business in N.Z and he diverted goods he was shipping to Auck. to Ch. Ch. instead. The partners started at first with a curious com bin ati on - rams and norm on gery . They som concentrated on noniongery and in particular on the Burgess + Key side- delivery reaper Morrow went back on busin ess tips in 70 and in 77 and in 77 he married for the second time the dau. of Bailie, his old employ a. This trip in '77 convinced him that the McCormick k Deer ng wore binder was the things to concentrate on ; and he brought out 5o of them. In '78 they passed 820 of these machines through their hands. The firm started in what were Livers Buildings - later Wardell s on Cashel St. near High St. From there they moved across High St to a building next dor to the Empire Hotel. In 78 they moved again to Manchester St. opposite Cokers Hotel. Beardsley was their high powered sales man. In '78 there were numerous trials of the thee chief reaper s and bunders on the market ; they were the Wood, . the Osborn e and the McCormick The trials had varying results so that each agent was able to claim a victory When the M c Cornice didnt. win M.B. +o said that "by the almost inaiuimnous opinion of the farmers on the ground , the McCormick was the best machine In '79 they introduced the Johnstone stroinp buinder . There was a trial fall the new stainger binders at Wm. Boag; Burnside farm 27.1.80 It wars a triumph for Morrow, Bassett . They wee first with their Johnstone string binder and 2' with their Mc Co1mick wire binder. Marks/Inscriptions: M. 648 This was probably one of the most profitable agencies ever kn in. Morrow bought Mos+ Montalto of 6345 ac out of Shepherds Bush Station. a carried 8000 sheep. In Jan 89 when the station was put ups he bought it with a bed of - 520 per amin rental. He put a manager on his place arndt returned to live in Ch. Ch . He was one of the promoters of the Ch.Ch. Mcat Coy. , was manager for a short time and an origina l director. He went back to Montalto ag aim and after o years settled his sons there and retired to his home Dal.ida . Papanui He was a strong Presbyteria and an elder at Mayfield and at Knoc Church. He d. at Dal ada , Papanui 1.9.20 ag 83. marr. (2) 20.7.77 at the Presby. Church, Ball on hunch , Co.
