Marks/Inscriptions: M. 3106 Mek e ham Capt. William Henderson (1839- -1912) was born at Paisley, and was educ at the Baths on Academy and was brought up to the sea and served on various ships. He arrived in Sydney in the S.S. Queensland in '61, and joined the Inter colonial R.M.Cay. which was afterwards merged into the Panama Coy . He visited N.Z. in the S.S. Lord Ashley in which he was 31 officer. In 65 he took charge of the S.S. Airedale which he commanded till the Company broke up. While in Adelaide he was offered the command of the Govt. steamer which he accepted and retained for 3 years . He was ther transferred to the telegraph Dept. and took part in the overland expedition to Port Darwin. He then joined the Black Diamond hue and 2 years after wards returned to N.Z. in the Dallard Towers as coastal pilot. After commanding the seabirds , he was put in charge of the omaha a vessel chartered by Hood of the Chatham Is to sale bet wen the Chatham and Auck . He c our mande the omaha for 6 years until she was wrecked at the Chat hams in 87 . Chudleigh says " Capt. M. was a fine seaman , a good navigator, a handy man , and good company. Cyclop. When examined, he said he had been in the service of the Panama Coy as Commander of the Airedale. He got 12 ion th s leave of Absence, went to Eng and brought out an other steamer for the Coy. When he go t back the Company was in difficulties and he had to stay in Wgtn Waiting for a command which never twined up. He had been paid £600 a year as commander of the Airedale. He had a wife and 3 ch. living in Ch.Ch. In '74 he was bridge building for E.G. Wright at Ash burton. He started the first Ash . Fire Bde. The Equip nen t was very simple and only cost . His wife had a son at Rangitata 24.6.75. In 78 he organised a gold - hunting expedition to New Guinea. It was to consist of 5o men who would each pul in £55.
