Marks/Inscriptions: L. 169 Leith, Capt. John ( opened an accommo house in what became kn own as Leith field and was granted a license in May 59. In Aug. 62 J.C. Aikman advertised his subdivis ions of Leithfield township Leith in queer ac. sections. He was see. and trees. of the ploughing match held at the Kowhai 2.9.62. He had bought W.D. Woods windmills and Ash we ith had carted it up in sections and he erected it at Leith field and it was grinding wheat in Ap. 63. When the Bench renewed his license they paid him the high complement of harrng the best house in the Province . He advertis ed Leithfield as " The Sanitarium of Canty : His first hotel bull of Sundered bricks later became Paget Hotel. He built a new hotel in Reith eld in 67. This was meant more to accommodate families on holiday and invalid s. This hotel got a tiene and was later carried on 4 Hugh Stace Launder the name of the Star and Garter Leith was bankrupt in 68; the windmill wes advertised foe sale with a r .585. large buick granary and a millers cotta ge, Wim Feathery took ova the mill. However he was back in '67 and was elected a member of the Kowhai Rd. Bd. d meeting of his creditors was held in Aug. 67. According to the electoral coll of 66 he owned at Mat time 230acs in Leithfield and 113 on Mt. Grey Dons. In 69 he was heard of in Auckland carrying on business as a share broker and mining agent. He was believed to haney been in command of a vessel trading with Aust.
