Marks/Inscriptions: born at h ore. Eng. H. 730 "Hood, Louis Walter (1838- 1912) was a sailor. In 1860 he went to a labour exchange in Ch. Ch to get a roh, Chas. Harper was looking for a man to take to Lake Coleridge. and saw a little man jumping up and down at the back of the room to attract attention . Harper found that he was a sailor and he knew sailors were handy men and he engaged him. He was started off for the Lake with a bullock dray. That ought as a strong Nor .Wester was blowing , he turned his dray round and slept under a sheet. ent in oringi he sit off for the hills in front of him , forgetting that he had turned his dray round He found later in that he had been making for the hills of Banks Pen. He stayed at Lake Coleridge for 5 years and saved every penny. Then he went to sea again as a purser and started to trade on his own accoun t. between Auck. and the Chat hams. He first had the Express which was wrecked off Wb hangaroa in ; then the Rifleman which the Han Han prisoners at the Chat hame seized and gob away in; then the Agnes which was wrecked at Te Raki and sold to T.Ritchie. He farmed it on a very im economic way and was ruined in the end. The mortgages , A.E.G. Archie Shand managed Owenga for years for him . Hood was made a J.P. for the Chatham at Chad highs request when Chudleigh was preparing to leave the Chatham in 1907.
