Marks/Inscriptions: H. 231 Harris on, Alfred (1846 -1901) was a small light man . He once sand in a speech that he was a working man but dint work with his hands. He had spent some time in the V.S.A and had been 72 days unemployed there and had been 2 '2 years in steady work. He had been able to Keep his old mother and surprised her with the pile of dollars he had earned. He had also been for some time in Canada and Sydney. He came to Ashburton where he was an arc tion eer , valer + comm. agent. He was very successful and was able to retire after 20 years. He was elected to the Ashburton Box. Corn top of the poll sept. 81, In Nov. 83 having g been 4 years a borough counsellor he stood for Mayor against the G.O.M. of Ash. - Donald Wiliamn and was defeated 112 voles to 8 He was defeated again for the Mayoralty and in 86 when Thos. Sealey beat him by 1Vote. In 87 he beat Sealey by 2votes He said he didnt. hesitate to make a row at the council Fable if he thought it was necessary . He was a great worker for the mins real societies of Ash. and also for the Ash. soemining Club of which he was capt. He d. Ash. 7.9.01 ag. 55 bur. Ash L.of . Cem. wife Mona d. London 24.3.19.
