Marks/Inscriptions: H. 228 20 Harris, William Hyde ( ) nay be the Wm. Haris who arrived by the Bangalore , def cabin 31.8.51. hot ling afterwards he was at Flax bourne in the employment of Clifford and Weld. The first consignment of sheep Frum Flaxtourne to Stony hurst were sent down in charge Alphonso Clifford, younger brother of Charles Clifford, by an inland route which had been explored by Weld. But owing to welds making a mistake in his identifications of hills and thereby giving faulty directions , the sheep were lost and were never recovered. The second mob to be sent down followed the coastal route as far as possible and were in charge of Harris . With him were Alphonso Clifford, Innes and two men, Stanton and Duckworth . They reached Stony hurst 18.3.52 as recorded , Harris in the stony hurst station diary which opens with this event. He cared as manager of Stony hurst until 10.2.53 when he left to take up his S. Canty Rem. Harris and Innes were form friends and their may have bo in edelstein parent ly started at Flax bourne whore they were both , employed. Innes didoot stayed some in gon thse been; log at Stony hurst but he seems to have employed Somewhere nearby - perhaps at Motunau for he appears in the diary at various times . Marks/Inscriptions: W.H. Harris H. 228 Stony hurst. one entry - -19.8.52 "Innes and J took out our 500 Ewes" They had a lot of trouble with wild dogs at Stony hurst. Lovegrove was one of those at Stony hurst when they arrived with the sheep and he succeeded Hais as manager there. There is as further mention f shep belonging to Innes + Haris but presumably they drove then down to S. Canty. Haris and Alphonso Clifford who had met at +labouring both took up runs on 53 which were part of the original Waikakahi . Harris Jun or was south of the Waihao with the sea as boundary . He built a station on the Waihao and t out ( d Stephens, his two d bought o t Alford to l e North ol hen ss neighbours . In about 5 he entered into part. with Innes his poi nep or and they worked their runs together. Harris lived at Waikakahi with C.H. Dowding as his Manage, and James macdonald lived at Pareora and supervised all the partner ships country. They diss part. in 64 and Haris in '66 (the year he was married) sold out to the McLean Broo Htesrris was a great racing man , a lover of Ho and breeder of thornley bred horses and was himself a first elas rider. After he had started Waikakahi he and the Studholmes ran all their horses in ore in oo between the Waitaki and the Hook . He was for some time superintendent for Clifford and weld and used to visit the stations regularly. on one of these trips he rode a match with J.W. Mallock, Ch.Ch to Horsley Down, winer to take both horses. Mallock was much the lighter man and won the match. on another occasion , on a visit to Stonyhunst he had a serious fall and was taken into the station for dead , but he was all right the next morning . The bloch where he fell still bears the name Harris Fall. He was elected to the Comm. of the C.J.C. in '60. He and C.G. Hodgson acted as starters in that year. In '60 he had the two high class thorough hed stallions Slid mere by Daniel O'Rourke and Marton by Rifleman standing at 10 gus each. In '61 J.T. Parkinson advertised all his horses for sale and Robt. Wilkin bought Sledmere for Moret on Bay. In Ang 62 Mark Sprott advertised for sale on account o f Innes + Harris one of the finest collection of thorsughbrids ever to have been imported to N.Z. They included Traducer. Lester and Mermaid . They had been bought in Eng. by Lancelot Walker and the ship , the Kensington had a very long dawn out voyage . Walker thought they could not survive and sold them to Innes and they were sold on account f the partners. Innes bought in Traducer and he ran with mares at Pareora for a year. As was the custom in those days he offered all his horses for sale att the end of the meting and Stoinburd brought £850, Belle of the Isle, £500 LF.W. Delamain) Magenta, £ 400 (Studholme) nebula £210 (Stafford) and Little Lady £150 Parker. These were good prices for the times . He trained with William Web who hed been stud groom in charge of Traducer and the others on the Kensington. Harr imported Sled mere himself, having selected him from Si Tatton Sykes 's stud at sled mere . He imported by the Burch He had a colt and 4 hillies on the Burial which was lost early in '60. one of the grooms in charge of the stock was Henry Harr is may have been a brother. marr at St. Mary's Geraldine by Rev. L.L. Brown 9.8.66 Maria Gase Sophia Craigie youngest dau. of Capt Macpherson of Stratheona , Orari and lake of H.M.59 Reg. . She was a sister of Mrs W.R. and Mrs Augus Macdonald and Mrs Herbert Belfield. His marriage may have ted to his selling Waikakahi. He was one of the fa who sold out art a good price and returned to Eng. Marks/Inscriptions: H.228 W. H. aris the hades Plate at Riccarton Oct. 77. John Hyde Harris , born at Wedding ton small parish in Oxford shine 24.11.1825 and arrived in Otago by the Poictiers 4.9.50 marr. Anne Cunningham (' dau , Mayor of Dunedin, Superintendent of Otago d. 27..8e may have Capt. Cargill, , W.H.H been a brother. But there is evidence that bie came from Devonshire. In the letters of J.t. Enys (Canty Mus. ) J.J.E. arrived by Chrysolite 61 and bought a horse from Mt Harris . He was at Chudleigh with Frank ( the eldest of the Enys brothers) he says : Chudleigh was a Devonshire school. The Harris family lived at The Elis , Chipper ham, Wilts . His wife died there 23.3.87 . The family was George, William, Evan , Mabel, Maggie. George eldest son lived in N.Z. for some time. He was elected a member of the Ch.Ch. Club '60 He was best man to David Innes when he marr. Catherine Lucy Williams 26.1.60. Harris 's Stony hurs ; Dray in 52 gives various names as already in use on Mill the station - Pender, the Gita the Blythe which were all taken from the county round Stony hurst Coll. Marks/Inscriptions: f there is any thing in the rather slender clues pointing to Wm. Hyde Harris being a Devonshire man . the marriage - as under Wm. Samuel Harris of St. Mary Major , gent and Mary Seward of Whitestone 8.10.1829 may be that of his parents. Devonshire County Archives , exeter Re the name The C haldon s , the block of Stony hurst facing on to the sen. no- one knows the origin of the name but Everard weld thought it was a Weld name ; it was divided into the near and the far chaldons In the description of Fasb une , the various blocks wae described and named n the sale catalogue and oue two of the blocks were the near and far Haldon s It looks as though a ' may beave got itself placed in Error in front f the name Haldon s .
