Marks/Inscriptions: H. 227 Harris , the ten. Archd. William Chambers (1841-85) was born in Hill his father being registrar in bankrupt y there. He was educ. at Bradfield Coll. Berks and at B.N.C. Oxford, B.A.62, M.R. 67. He was capt. of both cricket and football teams at Bradfield and rowed in his College sight and won nunnery oas medals at Henley. He was selected by selfe and was then only 24. He married Anna Matilda Sanders . He and his wife came out in the Blee Jacket arriving 14.11.65 and he was present at the prize giving Dec. 65. He came to X's Coll at a time when discipline was particularly needed. Dean Jacobs had been rather Easy . hot much is known of Broughton and he was on ly there a year and a half ; and after Broughton left there was a years inter requi Besides restoring discipline he instituted the prefect 84stern and daily religious service. The Rev. James Wilson , writing to Silh congratulated him ou his choice of Haris and praised Haris tor his reticence and the quetta wary he took the rubs and disappoint rents which a newcomer must experience. Leonard Harper also writing to Selfe said "Harris is for a wonder murch appreciated and fully reserves it. He is a first rate man and is working wonders in the College . We Haris H. 227 in spite of his nasty berd taster in proposing a vote for a rival secular college " He had been 64. 65 asst. master at St. Peters Coll , Rader and received his new appoint ment in '65. He was ordained priest by Bishop Harper at St Michaels 10.6.66. ( When did he decide to take orders ? . He then undertook the duties of chaplain as well as those of headmaster. In a few years he had collected a good staff. - Condell, worthy, Corfe, F.G. Brittan. He raised the standard of James as will as that of work. Under him and his successor Corfe, College reached a standard that it did not again reach till the present day (under Hornsby 1960) The Coles Chapel was opened during his time : it was crowded at the opening service 23.10.67. He took an active part outside the school , being vice pres. of the Canty Row ing Club Sept. 6o and acting as coach for the Club. Nov. 71. The Lylt. Times rowing cones ponder t wrote very highly of his cr tons. He promised to coach the crow for the Inter loria Race Jan. '71 .In 172 scene teaching was slightly increased and classiest slightly reduced. The Prov. Marks/Inscriptions: H. 227 ven Arch.W.E. Haris The Bishops was away at the Lambeth Conference and Bishops court was Temporarily lent to him. His health began to break down and he and his wife and 2 children sailed for London in the Charlotte Gladstone 22.5.72. He hoped to return but in July 73 he sent word that his furniture was to be sold and he would have to resign. Corfe , who had ben acting for him, took his place. Bis des being headmaster of Coll. he had been lecturer in clas s1es to the Canty Collegiate union and worthy had been acting for him. In Eng. he became Vice. principal and lecturer at Lichfield Theological Coll. under Selwyn. He was headmaster of Queen Elizabeths Grammar school at Wim borne 74-77 and then was Vicar of March woo . Southampton 77-79. He returned to Canty in 79 w and was present at the prize giving at the erdogan + ear at the Sports Oct. 79. He was appointed organising chaplain to the diocese of Ch.Ch and inspector of C. of E. schools. In 82 he became archdeacon of Blear oa but in '83 he retired on account of il health. He had ben Vicar of the Bays in '80. He was the first graduates member to be returned to the Canty Coll. Bd. of Governors . July '84. He was in perfect pose ion of his faculties al the time . When he felt his end approaching he called his family in and said good- bye to them one by one. and then "the calm order which has been the great characteristic of his life show ed itself in all its glory as he lay in perfect peace and quiet having his eyes steadfastly turned towards Leaver.
