Marks/Inscriptions: H. 194 Harper, Leonard ( was born in Eng, Either at Eton or Staffed Mortimer and he and his brother Charles came out to Auck. with Bishops selwyn in '54 2 years before their father. He first appeared in the Canty news when he made the first overland expedition from Canty. to the West Coast. He heard that a party of Kaiapoi maoris were planning to make the crossing and he asked to be allowed to g0 wi theo. ne of the Locks of Kaiapoi was also of the party. This was the easiest route f rom the Canty side b.it the descent in the Western side North was steep and bo brought the explorers to far South for pi poses of getting gold. Harpe r brought back a sample of gold. Edward Dobson was sent to prom ince of on the route and Ho with who was lost in Lake Brunner was sent to open up the track. account of journey LT. 20.1.58.
