Marks/Inscriptions: H. 148 Hardcastle, Thomas (1817 -97) carre out with his wife land family 2) in the Canterbury, arriving g Lylt July '58. They went to Kaiapoi first where he announced himself as a vet surgeon and horse breaker. From there they went to Fitz Gerald Springs station and for 4 years managed Longbeach when Fitz Gerald and his partners had it. Thomas Hardcastle and John Gill applied for a license at the River Hinds Ap. 62 which was granted. After Longbeach he took up land at Pleasant Valley , Geraldine. He called his farm Castle wood and improved it so marichal theat it amistad amistad became a show place and was known fer and wide. He went in for stock raising and had a dairy herd. A Lylt. Times reporter. making a farming review of S. Canty in '69 wrote, "at the head of the Valley stands the as dence of Mr Hardcastle and here the farming dist. may be said to begin. The land is patchy , part stony , part first class. The crops, part of wheat. part of oats , look but middling , the long droughts showing its effects. The owner devotes most of his attention to dairy farming and this may he said to be the largest dairy farm in the S. part of the province. . He was very fond of hunting and attended the meets of the S. Canty Hunt. He was a member of the Geraldine Rd. Bd. + C.C. , also chairman o f the Pleasant talley Sch . comm. He was e lay reader at St. Annes Geraldine. Mrs Harda sHe was b. at Levens, near Beverly , East Riding of Yorks Her name was Caroline Hell. She d. 27.11.13 ag '89. probably father of John Hardcastle te. She had 12 ch. survived by 3 daus. 6 sons. He d. Timaru 8.1.97 ag. 80 dau. Caroline marr. St. Mary's , Timaru 25.12.83 Percy Nin ward accountant. Eliz. marr. 3.11.75 James Park Wilson . St. Mary's Geraldine. Annie 20.3.97 Capt. Hugh Munro of the barque Lake Erie.
