Marks/Inscriptions: H. 143. Hanson, John Edward (1840 -1920) was born at Leeds , Yorks and came out to N.Z. in the Brothers Pride which arrived 10.12.63 He was employed as a button an the Wara9e and soon after he arrived he leased 10 ac. of Middleton from C.C. B6wen, and started a store and a butchery. Later bakery was added and he developed a large export business in shipping bacon to Aust. He was in part. with Patrick Swords but this was diss. Feb. 71. He was elected to the Ricc. Sch. Comm. Oct. 73. He built the Wooden part of his store in '69 and the brick part in 81-82 . Hanson stores must be oue of the best known building in Ch.Ch. When the widening of Hanson s Lauch started in 17 the l old familiar bric store disapp cared. He owned the Upper Riccarton flour mill in part. with John Hamilton It was later changed over to steam and called the sno - White Mill and was pulled down in 1925. He was a member of Rec. Rd. Bd and chairman of the Ricc. Sch. comm. He sang in the Rice. church choir and at cor cents and was a synod man , vestryman and church war den of Ricc. Church. Lovell. Smith said of him, he was a bluff and hearty Yorkshire man with fair hair and beard who would bing out the mart bag and hand it Cyclop. Joe Wilson drove the butchers cart; he was merry with a twinkling ere. His sons Harry + Joseph helped. Joe rode round delivering meat. He was present with C.C.
