Marks/Inscriptions: H. 137 Hannay, Walter (1846 -1916) was born at Throw bridge, Wilts . He went to sea and spent some years in America . He sailed in the Great Lakes streamers in N. America and collected tolls on the River Hudson . He was a Lieut. in the Pem vianney Navy. Then he went to Aust. He arrived in 3 N.Z. in '76 and at once joined the N.Z. Rail wong service as a clerk. He was appointed station - master at the Bluff and stayed there a year . he was then transferred to Greymouth where he stayed 6 years . In 97 he was appointed stationmaster Lylt and he held that paton for 13 years . He retired on sup cram. in 1912 and went for a trip in 1913. When at the Bluff he opened the Masonic Lodge Fortitude a hech he named after his parent lodge in Brooklyn N.I. marr. Xmas Day '79 at the brides home by the Rev. W.H Beck Louisa Emma eldest dau of W.P. Jones of Lylt. He d. at his home Hawkesbury A v. St. Albans left widow 1 sin went to 1914 war 19.6.16 ag. 69. 4 daus. widow Louisa Emma d. 15.8.38. both bur.
