Marks/Inscriptions: H. 101 Hammond , John William (1840- was born in Preston, Rutland shire and had a business training. as a young man he went to America for years . He returned to Eng. and came to N.Z. in 79 in the Op awa. Soon after he landed he took a position with J.S. Woodhouse , storekeeper of Amberley , for a year. In '80 he settled at Leeston under engagement to manage the Leeston branch of Walker, Smith + Co who had drapes shops in various parts of Canty. After 3 years he took over the firms business at Leeston and did very well with it. He was a vestry man and church warden of the Anglican church there. marr. 2 sons 2 daus son Major Herbert Harold Harn mond killed in France 9.8.16 ag. 34.
