Marks/Inscriptions: H. 74 )Hamilton . Frederick D. ( ) was a well known sporting character of Ch.Ch. in the '601s- - commonly kn own as "Dicker". He was clerk of the course for the first Grand Provincial s teepee chase in Canty . He rode in a match against another sporting gent called "0ry Hope. They had to clear 16 hurdles in a mile and there was a protest because Hamilton knoedler down a hurdle and Hope went through the gap but cleared the corner of the adjoining hurdle. Hamilton went back and jumped the hundley and lost the match thereby. They deeded to run the mald d again for £25 a side t race wa arranged was chosen t pick o a p100 side footr s and "Dicker n to k the ground and make all arrangements. ( Professional matches with backers an setter side and much betting were a feature of the times) . on the day chosen he drove out the tr0o runners and numerous friends in a four in.- hand and acted as starter. The party then dior back to town where much champagne was consumed. The hurdle race was is.rn in a fortnight. when Hope won , Hamilton falling at the last fence. He was one of the proposes to import some hounds from George Watson , the master of the Melbourne Hunt and to start a drag in Ch.Ch., May '66. Marks/Inscriptions: H. 74 Temporary grandstand was being built and two booths were arranges beneath it. Fa several days beforehand there were numerous Calcutta seeps arranged and sold by Barnard. It was held on Stakes Farm at the eastern and of Cashel St. Although there was heavy rain it was a great success. There were two minor Jumping races besides the mai event. He carried out his duties as clerk of the course very effinbly . He organised a further jumping event at Riccarton for June, '66. This time he apparently had some difficulty in collecting a presentable lot of stewarde There was some delay in publishing the list. Finally it appeared, containing anning others, "J. Greig" . Next day there was an angry letter from John Grigg saying he had positively refused Mr Hamilton the use of his name. Probably a letter in reply from Hamilton died not make matters much better Ly saying that he was an experienced caras ser and thought J.G. arlyne wanted a lite pressing; and s0 he put him i the list. This steeple chase included some ground outside the racecourse belonging to speechly , the Cathedral architect and Turton. The muck advertised + Liverpool Water Thump " opposite liv grand stand caused some trouble because the water ran trough the light land as soon as it was tipped in.
