Marks/Inscriptions: H. 51 Hall, Thomas Williamson, (1818-95- ) was the second son of Capt. Ge org Hall, master marriner, of Ell uga ton , Yorks. He was borne 5.8.18 and was Educated in France and Germany. He went to sea at the age of 16 and at an early age was an owner and master of a ship. At the time when his brother John sailed for N.Z. he was master of a brig which he sold for £100 . He sailed from Tor bay on 17.1 s with his wife and family an the Mohammed shah. The ship caught fire of the coast of Aust. and the passengers were lucky enough to be rescued by a Tasmanian big. They had had to take to the boats. He took up the first part of Blackford in July 57 . He had 4000 sheep on the south bank of the Rakaia in '56, says Acland . He sold to Henry and Albert Gray about 59. From that time he made his home at Timaru , brough he continued to own or have a share in various runs. He was onc of the earliest to take up a Mackenzie Country station. He was supposed to have quen the name Irishmans Creek after the very big Ins man bushes there. He was appointed returning officer for Timaru in Aug. 61. Marks/Inscriptions: T.W. Hall H.51 He was elected member of the first Timaru Rd. Bd. in 64. He was elected a member of the Ch.Ch. Club in 1860. In Nov. 70 he imported a 3- farr ow plough from Eng. - perhaps the First to be used in Canty. though Marmaduke aon was early in the field with multiple farrow pou des. The plough weighed half e ton and cost under- 3 landed. He was elected a member of the Timaru + Gladstone Bd. of Works Dec. '2. He called his farm nar Timaru Grange Ell ought n, after his Yorkshire home. He sold it to Wm. Granting ( '83. The name is still in oss. He had a fire there in Ap. 75 when 3 stacks were burnt an d also Alexander Prim gless threshing mill. When Provincial Govern ; came to an end , he and Rolleston were appointed General Govt. agents for Canty. Hall had to look after S. Canty affairs. He was d member of the S. Canty Bd. of Educ. Jan 7 and of the Tui am Harb. Bd. in '79. He became chairm an of the Harb. Bd. and also of the Ho sp. Bd. He was always a champion of the Timaru Harbour Scheme and had a good deal to do with the selection of Goodall s scheme. He sold hs Mackenzie County Run for £ 13000 according to Tim. Her. 28.8.67.
