Marks/Inscriptions: 30 son of Henry Hale cab. maker + harlot Triggs H. s. Hale, Benjamin (1843 -1921) was born in Portsmouth , and was a tent maker by trade and came out to N.Z. in the early 60's. He was on the comm of the No 2. Land, Building + Invest. Soc. July 68. He was a member of the Fire Bde and became deputy - Supt. When Capt. G.H. Wilson resigned from the position of Supt., he, at a diner at the White Hart , presented Wilson with a silver ink stand on behalf of 3 members. His shop was in Cashel St opposite Bates (now Johnson + Cousins) . During '67 he was very busy - supplying tents to prospectors making for the Malvern Hills Waipara and other parts of Canty. where they searched in Vain for +old. He was agent for Lennon who started a rope walk in Ch.Ch in '70. He also sold boots and shoes and had a charg sale June 72. a meeting was held, over which he presided to form a new Cricket elu - the Challenge Cricket Club. He was elected treasurer. He was prosperous in his business and was an original shareholder in the N.Z. Shipping Co. and attended the first meeting of shareholders to elect di edo. Jan 73. His business became Hale +6o in Dec. He was appointed trist to C.B. Turners Estate when Cabbage Wilson was removed over the yorkshire foo "affair. Mies 8 , Turner was his sister. Marks/Inscriptions: H. 3 B. Hale 2 30 In 84 , Ben Hale, then a wealthy man, went into the twine business , and in '91 he sold out of tent making. At that time he reckoned he was worth £1500 clear. He lost a good deal over rope and twine - he thought because he was nod in it an a large enough scale. He was bankrupt in Ap. 95 with a deficiency of about £ 4000 . He had made arrangement 3 with Doughy of Dunedin that he would take 25 tons of burde twine per mouth for 10 in on thse in the year. He had a rope walk at Kaiapoi, a shop of 66 fet frontage in Cashel St. a half - share in a farm of 1778 ac. at Methven. f.W.Mc Leland was his partner. He had been partner for 10 years with John Bates, ch na merchant, opposite him. His premises i Cashel St. were part of T.S. 846 which Wm. Wilson sub. let to him. 3.6.70 at £100 per acre . Hale sub. let back to Wilson by way of mortgage. He sold his share of the Methven farm to McLelland . Creditors agreed that he should get his discharge as early as possible. He was charged with an offence under the Bankrupted Act and was found guilty but Judge Denniston said the offence was purely technical and he wed would order him to come up for sentence when called upon. His discharge was suspended for three years After his discharge he went to Sydney and started a wine + sport bus ines . He had been a member of the Canty Bowling Club and in Sydney L.T. 2.5.95 : 18.2.96 : L. +S. Dept.
