Marks/Inscriptions: H. 18 Hadley, Joseph or Josiah (1817- was born in Staffs. Eng. and was an engineer, will suter ete . He and his wife arrived by the Strathallan 21.1.59. He had an a workshop in Hereford St. in '61. He invented a method of producing lighting gas by moving res nous quo with Sallow. In Nov. 61 Lumley gave an entertainment at the Town Hall and Hadley Supplied the gas. The gas meter was not big enough but the results were reasonably satisfactory . He advertised that he won ld drives pipes to os. ota in artes ian water at 3o much per foot and Thomas Gee dots maker of aerated drinks advertised that he used the new pere water (in contrast to Thomas Raine, his rival, who was very angry). He sunf the first well in Ch Ch , opposite Tattersall6s in Cashel St. The White Hart was said to have the best well in Ch Ch. but this may have referred to the above well. In '63 he opened a shop in Durham St near Oxford Terrace and offered to do any work conned ed with pimps, arles ian wells , gas or Seam work. He made some alterations to Mills little paddle boat the " Maid of the Avon: all his plant was for sale in '71 . Bankrupt) He d. at New Brighton Dec. 75 pass. list. Ref.
