Marks/Inscriptions: G.895 "Green, William ( was stockman to Wm. Barnard Rhodes and when Rhodes turned out 40 cattle at Akaroa in Nov. '39 he was left in charge of them . This was therefore the first cattle o2 sheep station in the S. I land. Gren looked after the cattle well enough but he was always seemed more interested in selling 9rog than any thing else. He was landed with a wife and young8 child and received £40 a year his rations of 12 les of flow, 3 tbs of rice . 14 los of meat, 4 ils of sugar and 1e l of tea between them. He also received 10 oto on all sales over te 400. Another stockman called Thomas Creed was also landed with them. Green and Creed died not get on well to gether and each wrote to Rhodes complaining of the Other. M3 Creed said that Green stole his provisions , and his money out of his box, and that there were always drunk people about the place - which was probably true. G ree was present at the hoisting o f the frag in 1840 ; the Mag stall was erected close to his home. He built a two - roomed house with a tr.ch chimne it was painted bought rd and gave the name to Red House Bay. He also built a hotel at Greens Point which was caled the Victoria; it was the first hote at Akaroa. It was later taken down and r e- erected at James Hay; Woodhouse : Acland : S.C. Marks/Inscriptions: Wm. Green. G. 895 Dampens Bay Road, . by Georg e Tribe. Ht was burnt down in '54 or '55. G reen built an other hotel opposite the old wharf. This was later town as Armstrong s bu dings. Green appears to have started whaling station at Island Bay early in his time at Akaroa . The Green woods had it in '46.
