Marks/Inscriptions: G. 865 " Gray , Henry Francis (1838- was a son of Rev. Frederick W lam Gray, of 364 Wheat hill, Castle Carey , Somerset and cance out with his brother Albert Charles q.v. in the Oriental. After long delays the Oriental finally reached Lylt. 12.4.56. Their older brother Ernes t had come out two years before thee . After some years spent at Coldstream station and then at Blackford , the brothers went in for farm land in the Kowai dist. north of Ch.Ch. Acland says that Henry and Albert bought land near Ch.Ch. This may be the farm at Templeton where Henry was living July 69. when the Templeton Ploughing match was held on his land. When the Rev. O'Callaghan retired from the Riccarton Rd. Bd. he was elected to fill the vacancy, At G1rggi ac s land sale M.10. 7 he bought Greggs rich Tre hals well farm at Hals well. He later turned this over to his brother Ernest at a profit. He ap pared to be living at Avon head at this time. He offered a special prize for skin ploughing at the Templeton Ploughing match and provided a paddock for it. His farm was described as being 1 mile beyond Taylors Hotel Yaldhurst. When the Riccarton school came under the Bd. of Educ. regulations July 72 he was one of the como . He judged long cooled shep at the Ch.Ch. Show of '72. In Dec. 72 he bought a valuable Clydesdale cot which took prizes at Dunedin+ Taieri. Comm in 7 He was chairman of the comm. which inspected Various sites for stock yards to to take the place of the Carlton Yards. The comm. recommended 10 ac. of Tickner s land at dAd. between the north lini and the Park which became the Add: Yards. The pr ice was £200 pe ac. His Tre hals vell farm was advertised for sale in Oct. 73 and the fore wing year he sold it to his brother Ernest for £25 per ac. (the middle 70's ware boon times) He was elected top of the poll for Ricc. Sch . Comm Oct. At this time he was one of the br gest suppliers of fat stock to the Carlton Yards. He stood for Ricc. for the Prov. Coun. Ap . 74 and beat troo old campaigner s W.1B. Toss will and F.W. Delamain. White the Rev. Aoa dailey Bowen was away he was chairman of the Rice. sch. Comm. He was advertising 7000ac of land o let in the Waikaia dist. July 76. This was Allandale which the Rev. A.R.B. Tosswill had bought out of Horsley Down. Tosswill had built a house on it. It ap eons at Allandale was of 5500 ac of which 147 9r was freehold and the rest leasehold. He only pard £4.15.0 for the freehold which was considered cheap. In Mar. 77 he sold the lease of his avon head farm and advertised the stock for sale . Marks/Inscriptions: G. H.Gray Hey They averaged £9.10 per ac. Wm. neve bought the 2 largest amounting to 2400 ac. 364 at Lg and £10.2.6 per ac. respectively, This was in 19.2.1910. He owned a property koon as Gray Cliff of 46 00 ac at Tai Taper. Heaton Rhodes bought t to make his home and rechristened it Otahu na. A.93. In '93 the land pol ag of the Ballance Govt. was alarming Henry Gray and he offered the whole of his Canty land to the Gov.t. for doer settlement It consisted of 14700 ac largely pastoral and the pries he put on it ranged from o to 22.18.0 80000 altogether; mist of it was in the Waikari dist. The Go.t. thought only 663 ac were suitable for settlement. Some of his land was subject to a settlement. and his condition was take all or none. In a letter to the LT. 19.1.94 he said he had 8671 ac in the Waikari dist. , and 6077 ac. at Templeton, Halswell , Tai Tape and Woodend . In the go0's he was living at Waiota , Judge Gressons old house; and took part in local activities - Northern A. +P. Assoc. , mandeville + Rangiora Rd. Bd. ste. He wrote several letter complaining of the new hand Tax of the Ballance Got., but he never wrote in an in reasonable way and was mather bitter nor angry. But evidently he thought N.Z. was going to be ho place for a capitalist land owner .
