Marks/Inscriptions: G 350 Grant., Rev. George ( 1869) arrived with his young wife by the Mary Ann 21.10.62. They were the only cabin passengers. He had come out in response to a request by the settlers of Akaroa, Pigeon Bay , Duvauchelles and Waning who had banded to gether and mmunicated with Dr. Bonar in Scotland. Ebenezer ay advanced £o 100 to pay his his passage, and the Banks Pen. presby eras had guaranteed £ 250 a year and a manse, After o year two years a call came from Ch.Ch and John Anderson came over personally to put their case to the Peninsular presbyterians and they no ly consented to let him g0. The St. Andrews congregation had split over the question of the Rev. Chas Fraser and his various issa oppose failings. He seemed to be not at all darned by the theories of Darwin and in money matters he was lac in a way that housed his Scotch parishioners. The Ch.Ch. Comm. at which it was decided to form a second congregation was pess consisted of J.J. Maephe i son , W. Wilson, D .M. McKay, J.C. Aikman, Robert Symin ton, Douglas Graham , John Anderson J.C. Angus , W.W. Bugler , Andrew Ritchie J.D. Feng using . Thos. Wilson, W.H. Mai , Thomas Owen, John John son, Andrew Duncan J.D. Macpherson and D. Marks/Inscriptions: G. 450 The two prime movers were John Anders on and Wm . Wilson. The Rov. George Grants stipend was to be £350 a year. and he was inducted in the old Town Hall 20.4.64. The first church of St. Pauls was built in Lichfield St. near Madras St and was opened 19.5.67 almost free of debt. -500 had been realised by a bera organised by S.C. Farr and Dan Ree. E. John Miln of Halswell also took a part. St Pails was the first Presby. church in N.Z. at which a haro un was used. Grant was a delicate man and the work in Ch.Ch. was too much for him .
