Marks/Inscriptions: G. 173 Gillespie, James (1802-86) was born in Ars ire and came out to N.Z . with Elizabeth his wife Issel and his son James Wylie who had been selected as the new schoolmaster at Pigeon Bay. all their family had died o f cons imp toon crept James Wylie and he too succumbed after 78 months in N.Z. James Gillespi immediately bought land in Pigeon Bay and settled down to farm . He was a leading Presby terance and was an office holder in the Church. He was a ruling elder of the church in Ch.Ch. and was one of those , when the split came from dissatisfaction with the Rev. Chas Fraser, who organised the St Pauls congregation with the Rev. George Grant from Akaroa as mister , Jan. 64. The other elders of the new Church were W Gaian, J.O. Macpherson, A. Rhind , Wm. Hender son The Deacons were Wm .Wilson gs D. Mc1Ray, J.C. Angus, A. Ritchie and T. Anderson . He was one of the organises and elders who got another mister sent out to Banks Ren. The other two were Wm. Stewart and W. S. Fitzgerald the Pigeon Bay Schoolmaster. Pigeon Bay had a series of routes with Rd. Bids owing to pais onalbi differences. When a new Bd. was elected in . Geo. Marks/Inscriptions: G. 173 James Gillespie the cash. Gillespie was chairman of the new board and the other members were Wm. Stewart Hunt. Litten and Fitzgerald. John Hemming way, also a member resigned in Aug. 68. In '70 Gillespie was re-elected to the Pigeon Bay Rd. Bd and Hemin sway was chair man. Gillespie wes d.airman in 77. His wife Elizabeth d. 1 9.6.69 ag. 74 marr. (2) 4.8.70 Jane Taylor , 40. she d. at Pigeon Bay 20.2.03 ag 76 He d 16.2.86 ag. 84. J. Gillespie was one of the judges at the A.+P. first ploughing match held at Joseph Hells farm. Avon head ang.
