Marks/Inscriptions: G. 73 Gates, Thomas Adkins (1832 -1914) was a builder by trade . He came out with arriving 2 .3.64 his wife and family in the Indian Emp ,. In Jan. 69 he was living on the Lincoln Rd. and declared himself unable to meet his creditors. He was elected to the vestry of St. Johns the Baptists Ap. 72 . The parish at the time was divided over the questio n of the Rev. E . Barley and he was one of the pro- Bailey party. He was a member of the choir when the Rev. Bailey left in Aug. 72 and he spoke at the parish meeting. His son Horace Arthur q.v. was also a member of the chou and had an exceptional voice. The family moved to ashburton in 79. marr. 8.11.52 Eliz. Jane Cave at St. Pants , south sea. She was born in Bristol .They celebrated their golden + diam ond weddings in Ashburton . They were living in Peter St. Ashburton He d. Ashburton 6.12.14 ag. 82 family 6 daus. 3sons She d. 19.9.14 7were married.
