Marks/Inscriptions: G. 59 Garrett, David (1832 -1909 ) was born near Bristol and spent 16 years at sea . His mother would rst let him 90 s0 he ran away . He served in the R.N. and later in the merchant ser vice . He married and decided to emigrate and he shipped on various vessels going to difent parts of the world so that he could chooe the mne that appealed to lim. He was an expert sail maker and and was a good hand at horse covers, stack covers cle. He finally decided on N.Z. and sent for his wife and 3 daus. He went to Lylt to meet them and arranged for them to go round to Saltwater Creche in a coastal vessel The Capt. made a mess of getting in and he gave decisive help- - So the family legend rons , This was in They stayed at Leith field for a short time and then moved to the Moeraki Downs. He built a sod house where his eldest son Henry was born. part of the house is still standing ; Victor Frizzell mow has the farm and the sod house is used as a dairy . He knew little about land and chose a farm which was growing manuka , thinking i it would grow that it would grow anything else . He had to clear the manuka and thing 2 went through some hard times and he once ist all his crop through a stack being burnt. a collection was made for the family but he refused Bolton, fam. i f. Marks/Inscriptions: G.59. D. Gare. sans Henry ( ) and his brother George ded much farm work in North Canty , shearing (Harry)a at Cheviot and Motunau and elsewhere . Henry married Mis Brooks in 1904. Her husband an Englishman died leaving her with a a dau who became as one of the family and married Morton Frizzell ; also Annie who marr. Christian Iverson of Lincoln Coll : David Henry who managed the Wgtn branch of the B.N.Z ; and Henry Edgar who teaches at Lincoln and wes a Rhodes scholar are Hays own family. George marr. late in life an English gove . He was in partner ship w ith Harry at Banner Downs , Fernside and had another farm at stoke s after that lae was in part with Gordon Fulton in a good sheep farm at Scargill. Harry was on the Rd. Board and 6oolong the first Rang. County Coun. Robert had hip des case and was lame and did not marry.
