Marks/Inscriptions: R.9. + Earl John (1833 - was born in Co. Wex ford, Ireland and was brought up to farming. He came out to Victoria in '5 by the Caroline and was on Castleman and Bendigo and all the principal Victorian god fields. He came over to N.Z. and prospect d in the Ha raki Peninsular. He returned to Aust. and in '66 came back to N.Z. and was on the West Coast oldfields. For 3 years. He then settled at Kakahi and took up farming . He lived on a 350 ac. farm and had several others in the dist. marr. in Melbourne Miss Balanc 11children. James Earl and Wm. Earl are mentioned in the Tim. Her. . Geraldine centenar Nos as settling in Pleasant valley after goldrnning in Gabriels Gully. Cyclop. N.Z.11: Tim.
