Marks/Inscriptions: C. 817 "Coates, Rev. Charles 1846-1925) was born at Whitby, Yorks and was the son of John Distin Coates, manufacturer and Eliza Millen. He was educ. at St. Angers tin Coll. , Canterbury , Eng. He came ont to N.Z . and was ordained deacon by Bishops Harper .5.75 and became asst. arah of St John Lat. Sq. He did some work in the dist. Known as Sydenham before t became a separate parish. a meeting was held at Waltham June 75 where ust of his work lay. He was ordained priest b y Bishop Harper before the nonal year had elapsed because he was posted to Waimate and he was there so far separated fr on ary other priest. He was at Waimate from 76 to '91 when he was posted to F When he was at Waimate he bought a tiny church which had been built for the Maoris but which for some reason they had Papered. He used it for a study and later t became part o f F. Ak hurst 's house marr. 28.4.81 at St. Michaels by Bishop Harper Harriett, dau of W. Guve Brittan she was b. 3.48 d. 21.4.34 he was b. 28. 1.46 d. 3.11.25. ag 79. He became Honorary Camm of the Cathedral when Canon Cotterill died. bur. Papanui Cem. Cyclop N.Z.111 S.
