Marks/Inscriptions: B. 1007 Burt. William Alfred (1843- 191) was born at Hastings, Sussex and went to sea as a lad. He was a son of Thomas Bunt q.v. and came out w ith his father and mother and their family in the Mystery arriving 29.3.59. He helped to unload the ships cargo unto lighters which were taken round to the Ferry wharf on the Heathcote. He worked at Cheviot Hells for thee years and the joined his father ore his farm at Rangiora . He farmed tr his owne accout at Am ber ley and found there was not much profit in growing wheat at 216 a bushel out of which carta at a shilling and the shing at sigh perce had to be par d. So he returned to Rangiora and bought a team of hor ses and started a car ting service to Kaiapoi which was later extended to Cu Ch. He built this up into a coach and mal contract business. The railway put an end to this and he concentrated on his coal Yard which he had arcade , Started. He also went into the grain trade and was a buyer for Peter Cing ham He had a farm called Picton opposite the Rangiora show Grounds. He built Ore of the Rangiora a grain stones and the weigh bridge. He bought Frank Dun Cop 's coal + timber business in Oct. 73. He was elected top of the poll for the first Rang. Bos. Coun . June 78. and was bankrupt. Oct. 79. He was a kean crick eter and was on the Comm. of the Rang . Archet Club . He played for Rang. trades men V. Milford School (Chas Merton s) . He also played r the Ashley Co. Cachet team . - a high class one organised by Chas . Ensor of MG rey. He was a vestryman of Rang. parish. marr. '68 Bessie dau of W.E.
