Marks/Inscriptions: B. 440 Birch Josiah (1833- he nas born 4.7.33 and served in the Aust Tiam Anny as a young man . He came out in the Westminster in '58 ; de Barbel was one of the passenger s, making his second trips. they wert into part. enters,1 in a saw mill . The L.T. in 7.6.81 says (in his o6 i nay notice) that his energy and skill marked him out; he and de Bourbel were the first to get an engine into the Range ia Bush. When the bush was worked out they sold their mill to Kenrick + Guin who had it moved to Oxford. Burch farmed for a short time al Ashley Bank and then became a merchant at Kaiapoi He was for years a prominent citizen at Kaiapoi . He was on the Bench on the famous occasion of the inquest on the Glen mart sway 9er2. He stood i unsuccessfully f r the Kaiapoi seat in the Prov. Coun. in '61. He was never defeated again i any election f or the Prov. Coun of any local body. Although the Lylt. Thes spoleto of his sawmill in the Rangiora bus h most of the accounts place it in the Kaiapoi Bash. He spoke at a meeting in farouk of starting the volunteers again after they had been dis banded by the N.Z. Govt. He was elected as member for Rang iou en the Prov. Coun. Ap. 62 and again May 62.
