Marks/Inscriptions: B. 360 Bennet, Alexander ( 1832-19 12) was born in the state of Balm dies Forfar shire , Scotland and arrived in Lylt. by the Matoaka at Lylt. 1.12.60 with his Wife + a2 Children, He was a car pere ter and builder by trade. He, John Hepburn and James Todd were in part. as builders th '65. John lep birn dropped out 30.10.65. The other two carried on . Benetton and Todd were bank rpt, July '68. In '63 Bennett was chairman of a meeting called by the carpenters and joiner s because some of the builders had discharged men be caused they had asked for a rise in Wages. The " meeting decided that the carpenters would stop work unless unless they were pard at the rate they demanded. '63 was a boom year and there was r great demand for housing the "strike was a failure. few men went out. This appears to be the first stake recorded in ChCh. There was no organised ion . After he was bankrupt as a builde in '68 he went to live at the spot on the way to oxford called after him Bennetts Junction. He continued there as a carpenter for 25 years and then started farming . Cust. He died at Cambridge North Is. 7.6.12. aged 80 His younger son Alexander was farming incar by.
