Marks/Inscriptions: B. 260 Bean , Richard Stanley (1836-1914) he and his wife and their infant son Walter Stanley arrived b y the Zealandia in Sept. 58. His wifes name was Emma Lawton Rath bore . They described themselves as diestro servants. They settled at Kaiapoi where he became stoneman to Josiah Buck + Co. He took part in All C. of E . affairs and was a vestryman and member of the sch. comm . Ap. 69. He used to sing at concerts He succeeded A. Brundell as Sunday Sch. Supt. He was librarian of the Kaiapoi Institute June 72. and ded much other work for the Oust. when the Kaiapoi Regatta wars held Dec. 72 it was spilt by , the river being very rough and high and he was out in a small sailing boat with his thee son . The boat over tipped and he managed to save his two elder sons but the youngest Silas was lst. He took part in the controversy over the Rev. Carlyon and his Cornish practices and resigned all his church offices. As he was a very quiet and retiring man this made a considerable impression. .He withdrew his children from the Sunday School. The controversy raged and Cylarapoi congregation n was: pert in half. In 79 he was living at Ashburton and carrying on the business a wood + coal merchant. pass. list. Ref.
