He then joined the service of the N.Z. Shipping Co and came out on the Waitangi as chief officer. There was a family of Rutherford s on board - James Rutherford M.P. for Chilled and of Summerhill Station Wart anga a. Bans became engaged to his dau Katherine and married her.
