Marks/Inscriptions: B. 87 27. Sey . Ballantyne, John ( 1825-99) ) was born at Selkirf, Scotland . He had a taste fer farming butt his parents desired otherwise and after receiving a good education he was apprenticed to drapery firm at Berwick on- Tweed, He served his time there and went to Lever pool to et wider experience. He arrived in Sydney in '52 in the Bloomer and joined McArthur + Co as traveler and later became a partner, established a brand of the busines s at Adelaide and also Star led another business ) his own which he sold to his brother Thomas in '65. He went for a trip to England in '67 and settled. at Taunting where he stayed a sar. When in Australia he often made trips into the county where his naturel motels led him and made friends with farmers and extended his knowledge of country life . When he returned to Adelaide he bought the business later known as Robin and Burks ; but he found that the climate of Adelaide did not sut his family . He decided to cross to N.Z. and have a lok at the Counting . He travelled though N.Z. looking at the county ron a farm ing pount of View. and was beryl pleased with what he Saw.
