Marks/Inscriptions: F PF. 290. Ashton , George came to N.Z. on a whaling ships and settled in Little Akaloa in Sept. '50 . He married Mrs Bennett and started a dairy farm. Mrs Benet was Charlotte widow of an early surveyor and the Rev. Wm. Aylmer married them in 55. He kept up regular comm uniting with Lylt. with a whaling bout and used to cary the mails. He also carried the marl to Okains Bay over the track. Ashton opened a store in C o. Bay in July 55. Ashton and Benetton (presumably one of his step sons J got the marl contract from Lylt. to Okains Bay and Little Akaloa. Trey were prepared to carry passengers and luggage as well. Gergen Ashton was one of those who made a collection f or the new hitle Akaloa School . Feb. 72. sous. Walter Mathew qv. marr.
